OUR VERSION OF
IMITATION BRAIN-TAN:
In The Frontier
Days:
During the days before modern tanning technology was introduced, the
brains of an animal were used to tan the hide. This was a long process
and was also very difficult to do. The feel of the leather, however was
incredible and the texture of the skin was unmatched by the leather
created using modern chemicals and techniques.
Modern Chemicals:
Most tanning involves the use of chrome to actually tan the hides into
leather. There are other chemicals that can be used in the place of
chrome, that can bring back many of the old characteristics that were
present in the hides when they were brain-tanned. We have developed
tanning methods and chemicals that can come close to duplicating the
feel of brain-tanned leather.
Our Developments:
We have an imitation brain tan that we have done to our deer and elk
skins that we feel make the leather almost like the original. Brain
tanning involved scraping the grain off the hide in order to take the
hair off it. We have buffed the grain of all our imitation leather to
simulate this.
The Finished Product:
What we have ended up with is a piece of leather that:
1. holds a
needle as good as the original
2. feels very close to the same velvety feel of the original
3. has a color very close to that of the willow-smoked original.
TYPES OF
BRAIN-TANNED LEATHER:
Deer Leather-Our deer imitation brain-tan leather will range in size
from 7 to 9 square feet. The grain will be buffed off of the hide so
that there is a clean suede napp on both sides.
Elk Leather-Our elk Imitation brain-tan leather will range from 15 to 20
square feet. The grain will be buffed off of the hide so that there is a
clean suede napp on both sides.
COLOR
OF BRAIN-TAN:
The color of our brain-tanned leather is close to the color swatch shown
below:
THICKNESS OF BRAIN-TAN:
Deer Leather-The thickness of our brain-tanned leather is between 2 and
2 1/2 ounces.
Elk Leather-The thickness of our brain-tanned elk
leather is between 3 and 3 1/2 ounces.
